What is Shingrix (Shingles Vaccine)?

Shingrix is a recombinant vaccine used to prevent shingles (herpes zoster). It is widely used around the world, with over 90% efficacy, and is especially suitable for adults aged 50 and above or those with weakened immune systems.

According to the Centre for Health Protection (2022), over 97% of Hong Kong adults aged 39 or above carry the varicella-zoster virus. One in three individuals will develop shingles in their lifetime. Infection can result in intense pain or prolonged nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia, PHN).

Why Get Vaccinated?

  • Effective Prevention Against Pain and Complications

Shingrix significantly reduces your risk of infection and prevents PHN – a chronic nerve pain that may last for months or years.
  • Long-lasting Protection

Clinical data shows that the vaccine can provide immunity for 10 years or longer.
  • Non-live Vaccine

Shingrix does not contain any live virus, making it safe even for those with weakened immunity.

FAQ

Q1: I’ve had chickenpox before – do I still need this vaccine?
Yes. Even after recovery from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate as shingles later in life.

Q2: I’m younger but have a weakened immune system. Can I get vaccinated?
Yes. Individuals aged 18 or above who are in high-risk groups (such as those with diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer) should consult a doctor regarding vaccination.

Q3: Are there any side effects?
Some people may experience redness, swelling or soreness at the injection site, or mild fatigue and fever. These effects usually resolve within a few days.
