Athlete's foot does not only threaten athletes; everyone can become infected.
An often very irritating and itchy rash with scaling of the skin on the sole of the foot and/or in between the toes. The fungus spreads through microspopic cuts or scrapes in the feet and moisture from sweat and warmth of the feet facilitates its growth, gradually leading to skin infection.
The fungus causing Athlete's foot is frequently found in showers, gyms, dressing rooms and swimming pools, damp areas in which people's feet have repeated exposure to wet areas. If the feet are kept hot and humid with no ventilation, for example in trainers during workouts or shoes in hot weather the fungus grows more easily.
The first form of treatment for Athlete's foot is the application of topical antifungal agents, either in the form of a spray, powder, cream or gel to infected areas. These can be bought over the counter or obtained from the hospital Pharmacist. Athlete's foot may spread to other parts of the body such as toenails, groin and underarms. For individuals with diabetes or those who have a compromised immune system, Athlete's foot may even lead to other infections which can cause serious medical problems. Therefore it is important to seek medical attention.
If the infection is severe or unresponsive to topical treatment, oral medication may be prescribed by a doctor. With prompt treatment, Athlete's foot can be resolved within 2 to 4 weeks, however it does tend to recur, therefore preventive measures are important.
The most effective way to prevent Athlete's foot is to maintain foot hygiene. Here are some tips:
