Why do I need a COVID-19 vaccination?
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic which arose at the end of 2019. COVID-19 is highly contagious and has spread rapidly in Hong Kong as well as in other areas of the world. Patients infected with COVID-19 may be asymptomatic or symptomatic with symptoms ranging from mild disease such as fever, coughs, loss of smell and loss of taste to severe diseases, to name a few, pneumonia, respiratory failure and death. Currently in Hong Kong, the number of daily COVID-19 cases has been fluctuated with little sign of lowering it to zero infection. The introduction of COVID-19 vaccines is considered the most promising approach for curbing the pandemic in Hong Kong and around the world.
What types of COVID-19 vaccines are supplied in Hong Kong?
The COVID-19 vaccination programme rolled out in Hong Kong in February, starting with the supply of CoronaVac inactivated vaccine (Sinovac), followed by Comirnaty mRNA vaccine (Fosun/BioNTech) in March.

The benefit of using CoronaVac generally exceeds the risk of not using any vaccines in persons aged 60 and above. Phase I and II data on individuals aged 60 and above showed that the vaccine is safe and immunogenic. There is limited phase III efficacy data for individuals aged 60 and above because of small sample size.’
Eligible persons who would like to have a BioNTech vaccination can make a booking through the Government booking system.
