Matilda International Hospital
Service Development Update in 2018/2019

In 2018, the Matilda International Hospital launched the Paediatric Unit and introduced Community Midwifery services to enhance current services to children and new mothers.

A referral Centre was set up in February 2018, enabling patients to enjoy a one-stop concierge service providing assistance in making specialist consultation bookings, surgery arrangement, insurance handling, transportation and accommodation. This service is particularly useful for those who newly arrived in Hong Kong.

Our standards of care are well recognized by external surveyors from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Accreditation, and we were awarded 17 Extensive Achievement (EA) ratings and one highest rating of Outstanding Achievement (OA).

In 2019, we will upgrade the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) system, develop bundled care packages, and promote ear nose and throat services.

Paediatric Unit and Service

  • The child-friendly dedicated Paediatric Unit was opened in August 2018, enhancing our current inpatient services to babies and children with an even safer and friendlier environment. Matilda is among few private hospitals in Hong Kong which provides 24 hour emergency cover for paediatrics.
  • Located on the second floor alongside the Medical Surgical Ward, the unit is fully secure with restricted access, and includes two bedded rooms. It is thoughtfully decorated and equipped to be bright, warm, welcoming and safe for children who require treatment and care.
  • Experienced nursing team partnered with doctors provide specialised care with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions for children from birth to 14 years of age. The unit is supported by the Special Care Baby Unit and the High Dependency Unit on the same floor.
  • Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay with their child whilst at hospital. One parent can stay overnight with one fold-out bed. Children also have access to books, free wireless internet, local & NOW TV and children channels. Soft teddy bears are given as gifts to paediatric patients while they are staying at the ward.

Community Midwives Service

  • Pregnant women who seek support after discharge can now book the Matilda Community postnatal midwifery service. It is an extension of Matilda’s renowned maternity care, bringing the unique care and support new mums receive during their hospital stay into their home.
  • The Matilda Midwifery team are registered midwives in Hong Kong and highly trained healthcare professionals who can guide ladies as they adjust to becoming a new mum, assess and offer professional evidence-based advice on well-being and home safety, advocate early bonding through skin to skin contact, support breastfeeding and involve partners throughout the journey. The service provides an important link when needed to the family’s paediatrician and obstetrician.
  • Home visits are provided up to eight weeks after birth, and cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. Charges start at $1,650 per visit (around one hour). Matilda clients can contact the staff during hospitalization. Alternatively, ladies can book by calling 2849 0321 or email maternity@matilda.org for arrangement of the service.
  • Up to January, 65 visits were arranged since May 2018.

Referral Centre, a service extension of our concierge service

  • Launched in February 2018, our Patient Service Centre extended its concierge service coverage by setting up a referral centre.
  • The Referral Centre comprises staff with customer service training and clinical background, assisting patients to make consultation booking as well as surgery arrangement with a variety of specialists. Designated staff will also assist patients on insurance and advise on transportation, rooms and arrangements. It is especially helpful for international patients or those who newly arrive in Hong Kong as they may require to seek more assistance apart from their medical needs.

Accreditation by Australian Council on Healthcare Standard

  • Matilda International Hospital was awarded a total of 17 Extensive Achievement (EA) ratings and one highest rating of Outstanding Achievement (OA) in recognition of its high standards across a broad range of key service criteria at the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Accreditation.
  • Learning and development is the criteria awarded as an OA. Surveyors saw the passionate way in which Matilda staff seized every opportunity to learn and cited many examples of the intense dedication to learning and sharing within the industry and communities.

    Extensive Achievements in 17 criteria:
Appropriate health services; outcomes of clinical care; medication management; nutrition; infection control; skin Integrity; fall prevention; continuous quality improvement; risk management; healthcare feedback; safety systems; workforce planning; recruitment; employee assessment processes; employee support systems; information systems; planning and access of data

Green charters & CSR initiatives

  • A Green Charter was launched in the presence of Fong Kin-wa, Assistant Director (Waste Reduction and Recycling) of Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong SAR Government, and hospital staff in August 2018. The Matilda Green Charter, the first in the private healthcare sector in Hong Kong, outlines the hospital’s commitment to promoting green initiatives and creating a positive impact on the environment.
  • The hospital has been also actively involved in corporate social responsibility initiatives, ranging from education, healthcare to social services.

Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) System

The upgrade of the MRI comes with metal reduction technology, enabling richer, sharper and higher quality images. It is also equipped with patient friendly features, such as noise reduction, needle-free for some MRI examinations (no need to have contrast injection), and lower table for easier access. Special coils can help position superficial parts of the body for examinations such as shoulder and fingers for better quality pictures. The overall duration for examinations will be shortened for improving overall experience.

Bundled care

We have introduced packages since 1994, and currently have almost 250 surgical packages. As there is a trend for patients or insurers to contain costs with pre-determined packages that include doctors’ fee, we have been taking a step further to develop bundled care packages in some of the services.

For orthopaedic packages, we mainly offer to individual insurance company. For endoscopy, such packages can be used by any of our patients. We shall expand such bundled care in 2019 and beyond.
