Integrated courses raise the safety awareness of fitness instructors

The fitness season is coming with the heat of summer. Matilda International Hospital (MIH) announced to introduce a course on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) particularly for personal trainers from May. The tailor-made courses are aimed to strengthen the first aid training of fitness instructors and align with the objective of fitness centres to strive for a safer environment for facility users.

Ms Hilda Ko, Health Education Manager, Communications and Project Development of Matilda International Hospital said, "The majority of fitness centres and airlines in Europe and the US already have the AED devices in place for safety reasons. New York even enforced by law to require all major public facilities to install AED, including parks, golf courses, sport arenas, homes for the aged and health clubs. AED is proved to be effective in increasing survival chances, rate and extent of recovery, or temporary and permanent disability. People defibrillated within a short period of developing cardiac arrest, have a 30% survival rate."

The new CPR and AED course will commence in May and be held regularly at MIH. Instructed in English, Cantonese, Mandarin or Japanese, each lasts for 4 hours and costs HK$250 per person. The course will cover basic CPR as well as an introduction, on operation, safety, maintenance and practice of AED.

A CPR certificate is pre-requisite and should regularly be renewed by all personal trainers at any fitness or health centres in Hong Kong.

Hilda added, "We forecast the growing introduction of AED and therefore have created training courses specially designed for personal trainers who desire to equip themselves for shaping a safer environment for sport facility users." To raise the safety awareness of the fitness environment, the brand new course incorporating CPR and AED is aimed at providing more comprehensive training to personal trainers by offering 1-on-1 practice opportunity and knowledge of effective first aid equipment. Participants who complete the course and pass the examination will be awarded a certificate valid for two years.
