Matilda International Hospital Showcases the Latest in Orthopaedic Surgery at Medical Fair in August

Many modern orthopaedic surgical techniques allow a shorter stay in a hospital, faster recovery and less pain for many patients. Procedures now offer younger patients with orthopaedic problems a chance to restore their active life and retain their flexibility. To enhance the public knowledge on orthopaedic health, the Matilda International Hospital (MIH) will showcase the latest orthopaedic techniques in the Hong Kong International Medical and Health Care Fair at the Grand Hall of Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wanchai at 10am – 6pm on 16 – 20 August 2007.

Restore to active life for young patients

Traditionally, surgeons may postpone certain orthopaedic procedures due to the life span of the prosthesis and the limited range movement that could be achieved. Thanks to medical advancement, today’s surgical techniques such as Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR), biological knee replacement and cervical disc replacement give young and active patients an alternative to retain their flexibility and restore their active life after surgery.

At the Virtual Hospital at the Grand Foyer, The Matilda will showcase these latest orthopaedic surgical techniques through demonstrations, computer animations, videos and model displays. Nurses, physiotherapists, physicians and healthcare professionals will be on-site to explain the equipment and devices used in the surgery.

Demonstrations on modern spinal and knee procedures

Demonstrations on the latest spinal and knee procedures such as Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement, Transforaminal Lumbar interbody Fusion (TLIF), Lumbar Laminoplasty, Cervical foraminotomy and Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (PLIF) will also be scheduled twice a day to give the public better understanding of the modern techniques. With precision surgery, smaller incisions and new endurable implants, modern spinal surgical techniques enable patients to restore mobility, have a shorter recovery time and reduce post-operative pain.

Free Fit Test to assess RSI and overweight risk

Being overweight always adds strain on the joints, causing bone problems. To raise the awareness of the importance of orthopaedic health, The Matilda will give the public free fit test including assessment of repetitive stress injury (RSI), blood pressure, body fat and BMI, etc at 10am – 1pm or 2 – 5pm during the 5 days at our booth (GHD 14, 16).

Visitors can also learn more about up-to-date orthopaedic procedures on different parts of the body and enjoy acupuncture treatment and health check package at a special price during the fair.

Public health talk on knee pain treatment

A specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology will support the Public Forum by giving a talk on common knee pain, prevention and treatment at 2:15 – 2:45pm on 18 August (Saturday) at the Grand Foyer.

“The Medical Fair is a good platform to demonstrate to the public many up-to-date surgical techniques. Through the 5-day exhibition, we will partner with orthopaedic sub-specialists to allow the public to learn more about the available surgical options, so that they can make an informed choice of the appropriate treatment to reach their desired outcome,” said Mary Rafferty, Chief Executive of Matilda International Hospital.
