New to Hong Kong Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) is a hip replacement designed especially for young people. Mr O'Hara, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham and The Birmingham Children's Hospital , UK will be here to teach surgeons the techniques for Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) at Matilda International Hospital . A press conference will be held at Matilda International Hospital on Wednesday 28 th May at 11am.

BHR is used for young people with arthritis of their hips. A particular problem in Asians is avascular necrosis, a condition where there is a loss of blood supply to the bone causing collapse and arthritis. It is also useful in young people who have suffered injury and dysplasia, infection of the joint and congenital dislocations of the hip.

The metal-on-metal bearing uses very hard high carbide steel and is extremely accurately machined to reduce friction and therefore debris. BHR more accurately reproduces the normal anatomy making dislocation rare, thus allowing more normal activities such as squatting and allows the patient to once again participate in sports .

BHR is used throughout Europe, Australia , Korea , Japan , India , Eygpt and Canada and is awaiting FDA approval in the USA . The Swedish National Total Hip Replacement Register, which follows all hip replacements in Sweden , shows a big difference in favour of the BHR versus conventional Total Hip Replacements (THR) at ten years in patients under 55 years of age. (0.76% failure vs 10% at 8yrs)

The patient cohort of 5500 independently followed up by Professor Richardson in Oswestry , UK has a verified revision rate of 0.76% at over 6 yrs.

“We are delighted and proud to be able to offer such advanced treatment techniques in our 100% ultraclean, high filtration operating theatres. BHR has enabled patients all over the world to retain an active life and return to sport at all levels including marathon running and judo.” notes Mary Rafferty CEO of Matilda International Hospital .
