Milestone 明德百年發展里程碑

 
Matilda Lincolne was born in 1829 in a small English market town of Halesworth. She met
 
and fell in love with Granville Sharp. They married in India in 1858 and arrived in Hong Kong
 
on Christmas day.

1829年，Matilda Lincolne 於英國小鎮Halesworth 出生 。她與Granville Sharp相遇後，
二人隨即戀上，並於1858年在印度成婚。1858年的聖誕節當日，他們抵達香港展開新生活。

Matilda died from pneumonia in 1893 at the age of 64. Following her cremation on a

hillside(the first in Hong Kong), Granville buried his beloved wife’s ashes in a cemetery in

Happy Valley. Granville set out in his will, in extraordinary detail, his bequest to Hong

Kong – a hospital to be constructed " for the benefit, care and happiness of the patient.

" The hospital ,to be a refuge for all in medical need, was to be called Matilda in loving

memory of his departed spouse.

Matilda 於1893年因肺炎病逝，享年64歲。 她遺體在山上火化(本港首位火葬者)後，他的丈

夫把她的骨灰安葬在跑馬地的墳場內。 在Granville於他的遺囑中詳細記載留給香港的一份

寶貴的遺產，就是建立一所「為病人福祉與喜樂而建的醫院」。這所為需要醫療服務的病

者而設的醫院將以Matilda命名（中文名稱為明德醫院），以紀念其辭世的妻子。

On January 27 1907, the Matilda Hospital received its first patients. In the first year,

84 patients were treated. There were 3 deaths, 1 birth and 14 operations. All patients

were transported to and from the hospital by rickshaw. At night the hospital was lit

by gas light however it was not bright enough to operate. During the day the necessary

light was provided by a large bow window in the operating theatre.

1907年1月27日，明德醫院接收了第一批病人。醫院在第一年一共接收了84名病人，其中

3名病人不幸離世、1名嬰兒誕生、並一共進行了14次手術。 當時， 所有病人皆以人力車代

步抵達醫院。 白天的主要光源是靠手術室的大窗戶。雖然晚上的照明系統是靠煤氣來

運行，但並不夠光亮。

In 1910 the hospital admitted 136 patients of 22 different nationalities followed in

1915 by a new maternity building with 8 rooms.

1910年，明德共接收了22個不同國籍的136名病人。1915年，全新的產科大樓投入

服務，提供8間房間。

Dr John Howard Montgomery, the Medical Superintendent, pioneered the radium

cancer treatment in 1929 and later gave treatment to patients at other Hong Kong

hospitals as well. In July 1937, the hospital trustees decided to donate the Matilda’s

radium to the government.

明德其中一位院長John Howard Montgomery醫生於1929年開拓治療癌症的鐳放射

療法，其後，該項亦提供予香港醫院的其他病人，成為香港醫學界的先鋒。1937年， 醫

院托管基金管理人決定將鐳放射療法技術捐予政府。

In 1941, the war broke out. The Peak was attacked by a bomb and the fire was

spreading to the Matilda. Staff and patients were interned in Stanley prison. The

Chairman , Sir Vandeleur, was tortured and killed for his part in supplying

medicine to the prisoners.

1941年，戰爭爆發。山頂被炸彈轟炸，火勢蔓延至明德醫院。醫護人員及病人被拘

留於赤柱監獄。 當時之主席Sir Vandeleur 因為監獄病人提供藥物而被拷打至死。

In 1959, the smallest baby on the hospital records was born at 2lb 4oz. Although

fourteen weeks premature they baby survived and thrived under the tender

care from the maternity nurses and her parents.

1959年， 一名重兩磅四安士的嬰兒誕生，早產了十四周，成為醫院歷年來最輕的

嬰兒。經過醫護人員及父母的悉心照料下，嬰兒得以活下來。

In 1975, the first sedan chair race was held. Since then over 40 million has been

raised for around 300 Hong Kong charities. It has now become one of the most

popular charity events in Hong Kong.

1975年，首屆明德慈善抬橋比賽舉行。至今，該賽事已籌得逾四千萭善款捐贈予

本地約 300間慈善機構。這項比賽已經成為香港為人注目的其中一項慈善活動。

In 1975, the first sedan chair race was held. Since then over 40 million has been

raised for around 300 Hong Kong charities. It has now become one of the most

popular charity events in Hong Kong.

1975年，首屆明德慈善抬橋比賽舉行。至今，該賽事已籌得逾四千萭善款捐贈

予本地約300間慈善機構。這項比賽已經成為香港為人注目的其中一項慈善活動。

In 1976, The Child Development Centre opened its doors to children with special

needs and their families. The Centre has continued its mission and has helped

thousands of children reach their full potential through early childhood intervention.

1976年， 明德兒童啓育中心正式成立， 服務有特殊需要的兒童及其家庭成員。

時至今日，本中心繼續我們的宗旨， 已幫助無數的小朋友發展潛能。

The new state of the art operating theatre was opened in 1999. The hospital

became the first in Hong Kong to obtain ISO accreditation, closely followed by

TRENT Clinical and Health & Safety accreditation.

1999年，手術室的裝修工程完成，並裝備嶄新的設備。本院並成為全港首間榮獲

國際品質水平ISO9001證書的醫院，其後，更榮獲英國卓越醫院評核

(Trent Accreditation)的品質認可證書。

The Early Diagnostic and Imaging Centre opened in 2001.

2001年，本院開設了疾病預防及診斷中心。

In 2003, the Matilda Children's Foundation was born to help children who

need life changing surgery. The hospital has a long history of helping children

and the charity is close to the hearts of all our staff.

2003年，明德兒童慈善基金成立，為有需要的小朋友進行能改變小生命之手術。

自成立以來，各方醫護人成功地替不同地方的小朋友進行手術，為他們重燃生命。

In 2006, the hospital opened a medical centre in Central, extending Matilda’s reach into the

community. The clinic provides a full primary and preventative healthcare service to the

community, including health assessment, general medical consultations, physiotherapy, dental

services and health education classes.

2006年, 明德國際醫院將服務伸展至社區，於中環開設醫療中心，為市民提供全面性的基層健康及預防性

護理服務。服務範圍包括身體檢查、門診服務、物理治療、牙科服務及健康教育課程。
