Matilda International Hospital Celebrates a Century of Care,
Compassion and Charity

Friends of the Matilda join the celebration overseas .

Matilda babies and staff from Hong Kong, Australia and the UK join to celebrate the hospital’s100th anniversary on 27 January 2007.

At the Edwardian-themed Open Day to mark its centenary celebration, Ms Mary Rafferty, CEO of Matilda International Hospital says, “The hospital along with Hong Kong has seen many challenges , the plague, the ups and downs of theeconomy, the handover of sovereignty andthe technology advancement. We have transformed ourselves from a cottage hospital to an international hospital providing primary to tertiary care and extended the strength of our maternity to women’s health and surgical areas. But we still remain committed to the legacy
bequeathed by the founder Granville Sharp, in being ‘ for the benefit, care and happiness of patients’.”

Many current and former Matilda staff and patients have long developed a strong affection for the hospital and are proud of being part of the history. A number of ex-Matilda staff will hold special reunion meetings in Australia and England to raise a toast to the continuing success ofthe Hospital today.

The parents of the first baby (either normal delivery or emergency caesarean section) born today at the Matilda will receive 100 gifts to share the happiness. The gifts are worth $68,000 and include a special maternity package fee of only HK$1,907, a cuddy teddy bear, a baby’s bronze feet sculpture, 100 hours of baby clinic sessions, limousine service and a number of free health education classes, etc. The first 100 babies born from 27 January 2007 (including caesarean section) will receive a cuddy teddy bear, a baby blanket, baby clothes, towels, Matilda book and B is for baby book and more.

The Matilda Edwardian Open Day will go back through time with many activities with an Edwardian theme from Edwardian dance, Edwardian tea house, historical medical artifacts to old time games and food delights. Those who were born at Matilda will place their hand prints in a ceremony to mark this memorable occasion.

The hospital opened the Matilda Medical Centre in Central this year as part of the centenary celebrations. “The new medical centre offering general consultations, health checkups,corporate health programmes, physiotherapy and dietitianservice provides a new platform to extend our high service levels to the community. We will invest in a high power microscope on orthopaedic surgery, upgrade of a CT scanner and introduce infertility treatment this year. ”Ms Rafferty adds.

Matilda International Hospital was set up by Granville Sharp in loving memory of his departedwife Matilda Lincolne. The hospital received its first patients on January 27 1907. In the first year, eighty four patients were treated.
