Preventing Flu – Get Vaccinated!

The new seasonal influenza vaccine has arrived!

The 2019/2020 seasonal influenza immunization is recommended to provide protection against the following viruses (World Health Organisation)

  • an A/Brisbane/02/2018 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
  • an A/Kansas/14/2017 (H3N2)-like virus;
  • a B/Colorado/06/2017-like virus (B/Victoria/2/87 lineage); and
  • a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata/16/88 lineage).

The Vaxigriptetra influenza vaccine contains all of the four strains.
The flu season in Hong Kong is January to March and July to August each year, so it is best to have the flu vaccine early to protect yourself.
High risk groups include:

  • Children aged 6 months to 11 years
  • Women who are pregnant during the influenza season
  • People aged 50 years or over
  • People of any age with certain chronic conditions

Children from 6 months old can be vaccinated against influenza. Children younger than 9 years old who have never received any seasonal flu vaccine are recommended to receive a booster dose 4 weeks after the initial one. Subsequent doses should be given annually.
Adults who have registered with us before (existing patient) do not need to see a doctor for a flu vaccine. Children under age of 3 or children under 9 years old who have never had the influenza vaccine need to be assessed by a doctor first.
